Statement about the future of FIN – August 2021

FIN has been deeply moved by the outcry from the local community in response to hearing an announcement that the Activity Centre (day care provision) faced the possibility of imminent closure.  We are extremely grateful for the support that has been offered by so many of you.

Up until now it has not been possible for the Management Committee to comment, due to an ongoing consultation period with the staff affected by the situation.  This process has now finished, and the following statement from the Management Committee has been issued.

For almost 40 years Friend In Need has been providing support and care for older people and their carers.  One particular area of FIN’s outreach – the Activity Centre – has played a vital role in providing day care provision for older adults.  However in recent years, due to extreme funding cuts and ongoing financial difficulties, the Activity Centre has been operating at a significant loss.  This has been exacerbated by it having to be closed for long periods in the past 18 months due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In order to protect the long-term future of FIN, as trustees of the charity it has been necessary to make the difficult decision to scale down its work in the short term.  As a result, the Activity Centre will only be open two days per week from 6th September 2021

We would like to express our continued thanks and appreciation to our dedicated team of staff and volunteers.  Their commitment and contribution over many years is second to none.

The FIN Management Committee
